Park is well-know for OldBoy and the other Sympathy/Vengeance films. The characters in his film have a way of bringing an intense force with the drama of their situations and that's no different with Thirst.
Song Kang-ho, a beloved and devoted priest volunteers for a medical experiment which fails and turns him into a vampire. Physical and psychological changes lead to his affair with a wife of his childhood friend who is repressed and tired of her mundane life. The one-time priest falls deeper in despair and depravity. As things turns for worse, he struggles to maintain whats left of his humanity.
What drew me the most to this movie was the idea of someone as sacred as a priest turns into something so dark and evil. It almost reminds me of Silver Bullet.
Song Kang-ho tries to battle with his devotion to God and his need to feed on blood. His struggles don't last long once he's seduced by an old friend's wife, Tae-ju. I can't blame the guy for giving into the temptation of getting ass. He's been celibate his whole life and has gone through some personal extremes to remain that way. Song Kang-ho falls in love with Tae-Ju and is blinded by to her conniving ways.
Throughout the movie Song Kang-ho does things for her he knows is wrong but it's for her and that's all that matters to him. Even after he finds out what kind of person she is and how she doesn't love him, he still sticks by her.
This movie is more than just a simple transformation vampire film, it splashes parts of comedy and romance but on a darker side.
From what I've read and heard from people, the film may seem like it's too long but for me it takes on many acts so the flow is a little different from what one would expect.
Overall, the movie was great and I'm glad I got a chance to see it. Thirst is playing at select cities and if it's in yours, I recommend seeing it.

I agree. I thought it was great too. Although I thought his struggle to do good was successful overall. Can't get into specifics without releasing spoilers but what I liked was that it was this tale about vampires, sex, violence, and a morality tale of trying to do the right thing.
I'm starting to feel like I'm watching too many moral struggling movies. Hmmm.
Maybe because you're dealing with your own struggle? I know ... deep.
