31 Days of Halloween-Day 3: Prom Night (2008)

Before anyone passes judgement, understand that my parents are in town visiting me so squeezing in time to watch a decent flick is a bit tough. Right now I'm watching Prom Night on Starz and counting this as my pick for today because after this, I need some sleep.

Anyway, if you've seen the original, you know it's a classic movie. Teens with a dark secret are stalked by a killer getting revenge. Before Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, this movie holds a template for the "who's the person we know behind the mask" trend.

On to this..interesting remake. I honestly can't say that this should not be considered a remake. It's a movie with the same title of the original yet it no way compares to the original at all.

A chick has a stalker ex-teacher that killed her family, he goes to jail and three years later he breaks out to stalk her and her friends at their senior prom.

The thing that I find so entertaining about this watered-down-for-teens movie is that these kids take the meaning of prom a little bit too serious. One person announces that it will be the greatest night of their life. Maybe it's just me but I went to three proms and well none of them had any life changing effects on me. Ok, so I didn't have a stalker who was willing to kill people to get to me but still, the meaning of prom isn't as great as they make it out to be.

Another reason why this just cannot come close to relation to the original is that there is no awesome dance scene in this movie. Prom Night the original had a great dance scene that Grease, Flashdance or Saturday Night Fever couldn't top in my eyes or heart.

This movie is something to watch to pass the time, if you're not in the mood to think about anything or be stimulated in any way. It does sadden me that in my teen years I grew up to watch great horror films and teens today get tame, toned down versions of great movies. I weep for the future.
