Let's face it, when it comes to horror movies, nothing can beat the heart and soul of the 70's and 80's. I grew up in the 80's so I've watched my share of the good, bad and cheesy.
In House of the Devil, director Ti West takes us back to an era when feathered hair and santanic panic was still "in."
In the 1980s, college student Samantha Hughes takes a strange babysitting job that coincides with a full lunar eclipse. She slowly realizes her clients harbor a terrifying secret; they plan to use her in a satanic ritual.
This movie is made for ultimate horror enthusiasts. And within those fans, I think you'll either really love this movie or simply hate it.
It's a slow-burning journey to discover what's happening within the house and what will become of Samantha. You're not going to see things pop out at her in every direction or watch her spend the majority of the movie running away. The plot is extremely basic but still effective.
What I enjoyed the most out of this movie was the atmosphere. I have a soft spot for homage movies and West reminded me of a time before remakes and torture porn dominated the box office.
House of the Devil is a nostalgic throw-back to old school horror so if you're a fan of the genre you may fall in love with the style and mood or maybe you'll find it boring and predictable. Either way I still think it's something horror lovers should experience.

I dig the atmosphere of it. I also dig the slow burn but I felt as if the ending was a little too generic. It was pretty much what I was expecting so I felt let down. Not a fault of the director as very few directors today can pull off the uneasy feel that he was able to generate. That takes talent.
I did think that the ending would be a step up from what everyone was expecting so it took me time to digest it as just a throw back film. If we watched this in the 80's we would think it was the greatest movie ever.
I loved loved loved this movie. It actually took the time to make you believe its two lead characters were best firends, and the bits with Tom Noonan obsessively reminding her about ordering pizza were hysterical. The stretch of the movie where she explores the house, and you're waiting for something, anything to jump out at her at any moment had me on the edge of my seat.
That one scene where she was at the sink filling up her water and head was down blocking the window, I was so ready to see A.J. Bowen's face in the window every time. I love that those we waited for things to happen that didn't, I took relieve in having that tension eased.

It's a real slow burn. I thought it was ok.
The nostalgic 80s feel is awesome but the odd scene switching...gratuitous 80s montage of her dancing around the house...then whoa! creepy time.
It was decent...but I'm in the minority of people who thought this was ok.
I would have liked it if the plot was a touch more than just basic but other than that I dug the feel of the movie.
